Astrobiological implications of the stability and reactivity of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) in concentrated sulfuric acid, could lead to discoveries in Venusian clouds. Could life exist in the clouds of Venus? Life, as we understand it, hinges on genetic polymers capable of encoding biological complexity. By demonstrating that PNA—a structural cousin of DNA—can endure conditions long thought to be hostile to complex organic chemistry, we’ve started a new chapter on the potential of sulfuric acid as a solvent for life.
